** 2023 Was Great! But We Can Do Better.

Hi Thunderbird family=2C Jason here! =F0=9F=91=8B

Thunderbird enjoyed a fantastic 2023=2C which was highlighted by the relea=
se of Thunderbird 115 =E2=80=9CSupernova=E2=80=9D and a brand new logo. Bo=
th of these milestones represent a revitalized Thunderbird project=2C with=
 our entire team feeling excited about developing a modern Thunderbird wit=
h a more intuitive interface=2C lean code=2C and useful new features.

But today I want to focus more on where we stumbled=2C the lessons we lear=
ned=2C and the decisive steps we=E2=80=99re taking to do better in 2024!

** #1: Late or Missing Features
------------------------------------------------------------

In 2023=2C we failed to finish some of the great features we wanted to del=
iver=2C including Thunderbird Sync. We also missed our target release wind=
ow for Thunderbird on Android=2C after deciding to use extra development t=
ime to add the kind of functionality and flexibility you expect from Thund=
erbird software.

Sometimes we get so excited about things we=E2=80=99re working on that we=
 over-promise and under-deliver. This can happen when a feature=E2=80=99s=
 development isn=E2=80=99t meticulously planned out. We=E2=80=99re solving=
 this with the recent hiring of Kelly McSweeney=2C Senior Technical PM. Ke=
lly is building processes and tools to accurately gauge how long developme=
nt time will take=2C from big projects to the smallest tasks. She=E2=80=99=
s getting us very organized and making things run more efficiently. This w=
ill result in smoother operations and clearer communication with you going=
 forward!

** #2: More Open=2C More Frequent Communication
------------------------------------------------------------

By listening to our community=2C we realized we haven=E2=80=99t been as tr=
ansparent as an open source project should be. And we have taken it to hea=
rt. Since the beginning of 2024=2C we=E2=80=99ve had several meetings devo=
ted to this=2C and are taking immediate steps to do better.

To begin with=2C you=E2=80=99ll start seeing monthly Developer Digests lik=
e this one (https://blog.thunderbird.net/2024/01/thunderbird-monthly-devel=
opment-digest-january-2024/) from Alex=2C to give you an early look at the=
 work currently being planned. We=E2=80=99re also increasing our activity=
 on these Thunderbird mailing lists (https://thunderbird.topicbox.com/late=
st) =2C where you can give direct feedback to Thunderbird developers.

And we=E2=80=99re committing to monthly Community Office Hours sessions. T=
his is where you can get some face time with our team=2C ask questions=2C=
 and watch presentations about upcoming features and improvements by the d=
